Wear a good sunscreen that has Zinc Oxide in it.  There are a lot of confusions in today’s market on what SPF means and how it works, etc.  When a product says it has a 30 SPF, this is only referencing to UVB rays.  This is stating, that if you have nothing on your skin, and you normally would start to burn in 10 minutes, that particular sunscreen would protect you 30 times longer than if you put nothing on, so about 300 minutes.  But again, this is only the UVB rays.  Think UV”A”=Aging and UV”B”=Burning!!  Unless you have a broad spectrum sunscreen, you are still getting the STRONG UVA rays that damage your skin and leads to premature aging!  Obagi’s sunscreens carry a minimum of 9.0% Zinc Oxide, which is almost double the amount of many medical grade sunscreens.  Another tip: windows and water block UVB rays, but not UVB rays!!  So you need to wear sunscreen even when “just running errands.”

In article on SFGate.com, the author shares interesting information about the promises and the realities of makeup.

The author encourages readers to use both sunscreen lotion as well as SPF makeup.

Why? Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen (you need about half a teaspoon for your face and neck to get the required thickness).

“Sunscreen lotions and sprays alone let some UV light sneak through, and people skimp on application, just as they do with makeup. The best way to stay protected: Double-up by layering makeup over a moisturizer containing an SPF of 15 or higher and UVA filters (Mexoryl, Helioplex, or avobenzone).”
